Static electricity in the textile industry
The process of rolling textile fabrics at high speed generates high charges and may result in sparks that damage the surface and in extreme cases cause fire. When printing, textiles are even more susceptible to fires due to the flammable volatile materials used.
The textile industry suffers from electrostatic charges generated during the manufacturing process. When leaving rollers, textiles generate static charges by contact differences of potential which can amount to several kilovolts.
In the wool and cotton industries static charge affects the fibres during carding and spinning by weakening and causing irregularities of the yarns.
